CHAPTER NINE

How Cynthia ended up hanging off the edge of a skyscraper was beyond her scope of recollection. All she knew was that she was trapped at what had to be a hundred stories high on a moveable platform used by window-washing madmen. At least they usually had safety harnesses.

Her high-heeled shoes slid as the wind jerked the platform back and forth. Her heart pounded so hard it choked her and made it difficult to breathe. The cold wind hit the pieces of her bare flesh not covered by the skimpy dress, first prickling and then numbing her nerves.

Lights from the city surrounded her in a view that would have been beautiful under other circumstances. Outside, alone, about to fall to her death, it was pure hell. She turned back to the window. The men inside could save her if they wanted, but instead, they sat, drinking their expensive liquor in their overpriced suits. She couldn’t hear them over the wind, but she saw them laughing and betting while pointing at her. Money changed hands every time she slipped. She was the entertainment.

Cynthia hated that she still begged them to let her inside. She tried letting go of the platform to smack at the glass in brief patterns of bravery that only lasted one slap before she clung to the rail again. The platform shifted violently as one of the four corner straps came loose. She screamed, flailing to hold on and knowing there was nothing she could do to stop what was coming.

The blare of a distant car horn caused her body to jerk at the exact moment a second strap was cut loose, and her body was flung away from the building.

Cynthia flailed and gasped for a hard breath as she awoke in the theater apartment. Her heart still choked her throat, and she felt cold despite the warm blanket. Her foot hit flesh as she kicked Josh in her terrified state. Josh grunted and lifted his head from the back of the couch where it rested. His arms uncrossed from his chest, and he yawned as if he, too, had just come awake. He reached to touch her leg, patting it in comfort.

“It’s just a dream, Cynthia,” he said softly. His tone was dull as if this was not the first time he had comforted her with those words. His head started to lean back as he prepared to go back to sleep. “Rest easy. You’re safe.”

“Josh,” Cynthia whispered. Soft light came through the window to indicate it was still early. “Have you been here all night?”

Josh lifted his head and looked at her. “You’re up.”

“Tell me you didn’t sleep like that,” Cynthia said. The rest had helped. She felt better than she had since before the séance.

He smiled. “It’s fine. I’ve slept in worse places.”

Cynthia sat up and peeked toward the bedroom. “We should get out of here. We need to regroup and… We need to go.”

He nodded. “I have my car. I’ll take you back to the hotel.
